WOOD COLLIERY:

This course provides the ideal opportunity for you to experience the art of a wood collier making charcoal the traditional way.

A sustainable woodland craft where low value timber, the by-product of sustainable coppice management, is transformed into a environmentally friendly, high quality and highly valued product.

This is a one day practical course where you will learn the process of charcoal burning.

The Course will start at 10:00 and you should arrive at the log store by 09:50 (full details upon booking) and be accompanied into Idston Woods.

You will be taken to a kiln which has been burning through the night and will discuss the time scales of shutting down a kiln.

Followed by cutting, loading timber for the ring kiln, fire up the kiln and stay with it until it is safely under control.

This way with the two kilns, you will see all the key parts of the burning process.

We will discuss suitable timber species, types of kilns, production, promotion and packaging, artists charcoal and bio-char.

The day will aim to finish around 17:00, but please except that due to the nature of this course it could finish a little later.

Foraging re-awakens your senses so you gain a greater appreciation of the environment, and your place in the natural cycles and rhythms of life.

This is a one day practical course where you will learn to recognize edible plants and forage wild food sustainably and safely.

You will be introduced to over 20 edible plants, taught how to build a fire specifically for cooking and shown how to prepare and cook a delicious meal with the treasures you have foraged.

The laws regarding foraging will be discussed, you will be shown poisonous plants to avoid and you will be shown how to purify river water to drink.

Lunch is created on an open fire from foods foraged on the day and you get a jar of Wild garlic pesto to take home.
